Firm Profile

R. Forney & Associates was formed in 2006 as a Limited Liability Company to provide high-quality structural engineering services to architects, owners, and industry.

Serving primarily as consultants, R. Forney & Associates provides the following services for building structures:

Design - to conceive and plan out in the mind / to draw the plans for.

Our approach to design is to assume the role of a problem solver. Projects vary greatly in size and complexity but they are all born out of problems such as: an Owner needs more space, a wall is displaced and cracked, how much load can this floor take? Through careful listening and collaboration, we try to understand the problem and apply the appropriate techniques for achieving solutions. These techniques can range from performing calculations on “the back of an envelope” to utilizing a finite element analysis program and the presentation of these solutions can take the form of “hand drawn sketches” to AutoCAD® produced drawings.

Investigation - to observe or study by close examination.

Achieving solutions to problems with existing structures usually requires an investigation in some form. It may entail a simple review of existing drawings, if available, to an in-depth survey that includes a sampling and testing program. When existing documentation does not exist, a field investigation is required to measure and document the existing conditions. Seeing first hand the existing conditions is the best way to solve the problem. We utilize the appropriate level of investigation for achieving the solution.

Evaluation - to determine the worth of by careful study.

Arriving at solutions oftentimes requires contemplating various options. Should it be replaced or reinforced; what is the best choice of framing materials; is there another way to support this floor? Each project is unique and has a unique set of variables that must be considered. We like implementing a “what if…?” approach with our clients to facilitate the process of achieving an appropriate solution and welcome the same from them.

Rehabilitation - to restore to a former capacity.

Rehabilitating a structure may result from an evaluative phase of a project or may just be an obvious solution to the problem. The re-use of a structure can have many benefits (economical, environmental, aesthetics) which vary for each project. Our past experience with existing buildings has provided opportunities to utilize various techniques for rehabilitating and strengthening existing structural systems. Our “what if…?” approach can oftentimes provide a simple, creative solution to the problem.

The firm embraces unique challenges that require intensive design and detailing efforts and close client collaboration. Achieving the client’s goals is a core principle of the firm.

R. Forney & Associates has experience with reinforced concrete, prestressed concrete, masonry, structural and light-gauge steel, and timber structures that range from new construction to over 100 years old. The firm utilizes various structural analysis and design software and AutoCAD drafting software to assist in the design process. If required, three-dimensional finite element modeling and analysis can be employed for special projects.

President Randall Forney, PE, has more than eighteen years of professional experience, including the last seven with Keast & Hood Co. in Philadelphia.
